As part of a recent Special Periodic Survey (SPS) conducted in a Caribbean shipyard, EOS Europe was engaged to remove and replace 21 safety-critical Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems on behalf of the client. This scope was essential to ensure the continued reliability and compliance of the vessel’s power infrastructure, which supports safety and control systems.
Planning and Compliance
Comprehensive pre-work preparations were undertaken in full alignment with the client’s HSEQ policies and procedures. This included the development and approval of:
- Permit-to-Work documentation
- Task-specific Risk Assessments
- Method Statements tailored to site and operational conditions
All preparatory activities were designed to ensure a safe and compliant execution strategy in line with industry best practices.
Execution Scope
The works included the following:
- Safe isolation of existing electrical systems
- Review and updating of as-built documentation
- Disconnection and removal of associated power, control, and instrument cabling
- Decommissioning and removal of existing UPS units, battery chargers, and battery banks
All removal activities were carried out by EOS personnel in accordance with approved rigging and lifting
procedures, ensuring safety and control in confined or sensitive areas of the vessel.
Installation and Commissioning
New UPS units, including chargers and batteries, were transported and installed using the same rigorously controlled rigging and lifting methods. EOS Europe then completed:
- Cable glanding and termination
- System testing and verification
- Mechanical completion of all installed equipment and associated cabling
All installation activities were carried out in accordance with client specifications and were subject to inspection and approval by both the client’s representative and the DNV surveyor.
